Leadership is essential to every single business undertaking. And there is a shortage of good leaders. Furthermore, the failure rate for leaders in America's businesses is at the almost unbelievable level of over of 50%. Why is it that leadership which has been studied for hundreds of years cannot be more sustainable than this? They have been thousands of books and probably millions of articles written about leadership and yet we can't seem to get it right.

For many years we have taken an assembly line approach to training. Everybody doing a particular job in the business compulsorily attends an identical program. Now, if the content of the training program is just information, then that may be suitable. However, any training program that requires a change of behaviour in the workplace this "one size fits all" doesn't work. Traditionally, we have taken a cookie cutter approach to training regardless of the desired outcome and incurred a large cost. We need to adopt a different approach to training by starting at the desired outcomes and working backwards to develop successful processes.

A very valid point there at number 3 Barry. A leader should be able to read between the lines and reward his team mate with the kind of appreciation that'll motivate him to perform even better. Then you've summed it up excellently at number 8. Expectations put a lot of pressure on the employees where as requirements or commitments, as I would call them only give a clear and precise time frame in which the team members should attempt to complete the job.
Your post is to the point and very informative. Liked your writing style as well. Cheers
