O.A.T.S. Planning Method

30 minutes

Often times, busy people are just too plain busy to REACT to what’s going on around you, let alone PLAN. The Manager’s Intelligence Report offers the following formula for planning your entire week in just 30 minutes (courtesy of the President’s Newsletter):

  • O » Objectives » What results do you want to see by the end of the week? Write them down and rank them.
  • A »  Activities » What do you have to do to achieve your goals? List the necessary activities, and put them in sequence.
  • T » Time » How much time will each activity require? To plan realistically, allow yourself more time than you think you will actually need. This gives your flexibility if unexpected problems develop.
  • S »  Schedule » Look at your calendar and decide when you can do each activity. Most people underestimate the power of a schedule, but you won’t get anything accomplished if you don’t schedule time to do it.

Hospital Care Patient Advocacy

As a sidebar to normal business activities, sometimes it’s our job to look after loved ones when they enter the hospital. To that end, here’s what I found are important things to keep in mind/do:

  1. Remain vigilant AND calm
  2. Engage with nurses, aides and support staff as the trained professionals they are, AND as caring human beings, doing important work on your behalf – calling them by name and greeting them pleasantly both in the room AND the hallways builds rapport, which will likely be helpful
  3. Clarify – across all shifts, day/night/weekend – what you should expect with respect to things like responsiveness to the call button; pain med schedules; how often vitals will be taken; how long meal delivery takes; when the doctors typically do their rounds; how best to raise concerns, should any arise; etc. – knowing what to expect, compared to not having a clue, makes a BIG difference  Continue reading
